Anodic Oxidation of a-naphthol Derivative A Facile Route to Ring Closure Products

The anodic oxidation of a-naphthol derivatives lead to the formation of naphthoxenium-ion which in the absence of another nucleophile adds to the ca rboxyl group attached to the side cha in in the 4-pos it i on. I n fact the ring closure product depends on the side chain length and the group attached to the side chain.read more

Identification of Arachidonic Acid in Lipids of Petersia africana

The 1 ipid extract prepared from the bark of the West African Petersia africana was found to contain arachidonic compound (C.20:4) in substantial amount. The pure compound after isolation by preparative gasliquid chromatography (glc) was identified by both physical and chemical methods. In addition other fatty acids linoleic (C 18:2), oleic (C 18:1), palmitoleic (C 16:1) myristoleic (C 14:1) lauroleic (C 12:1) were also found. The lipid fraction proved to contain triacylglycerol, cholesterol ester, hydrocarbons and glycosides. This is the first report of the detection of arachidonic compound in P.africana.read more

Effect of Temperature and Thermodynamic Quality of Solvent on Viscosity of Polystyrene

The intrinsic viscosity [n] of polystyrene is investigated with respect to temperature (15°-45°C) and thermodynamic quality of the solvent. These measurements are made using the pure as well as mixed solvents (solvent/non-solvent). From the observations, it is proved that one gets a maximum in the intrinsic viscosity, when it is plotted against temperature, secondly the [n] decreases with the decrease in the thermodynamic quality of the solvnet.read more

Chlorosulphonation of Thiophene and Furan-2-Carboxanilides

Thiophene-2-carboxanilide, the £-chloro,bromo, nitro derivatives and N-(2'-pyridyl) thiophene-2-carboxamide reacted with chlorosulphonic acid to give the sulphonyl chlorides (I, VIII, XIV, XVI, XVIII). The yields were comparatively low when electron-withdrawing groups were present, e.g. nitro and 2-pyridyl. With the £-carboxy derivative only thiophene-2-carboxylic acid was isolated and the £-methyl derivative gave an unidentified product. Furan-2-carboxanilide with chlorosulphonic acid afforded the sulphonyl chloride (XXII). With the unsubstituted heterocyclic carboxanilides, sulphonat i on occurred in the phenyl ri ng to gi ve (I, XX I I) but with subst ituted anilides reaction occurred preferentially in the 4-position of the heterocyclic nucleus. The spectral data of the compounds are briefly discussed.read more

Some new derivatives of Imipramine[lO,ll-Dihydro-N, N-dimethyl( -5H-dibenz (b,f) azepine-5-Propanamine)] and Chloroquine [7-chloro-4-(4-diethylamino-l-methyl butyl amino quinoline)]

von Braun (BrCN) reaction and its extension carried out on imipramine resulted in the formation of N-cyano, N-amido and N-dimethyl amino-(diamine) derivatives. On the other hand, chloroquine on reaction with BrCN yielded three cyano derivatives. All these derivatives have been characterized through spectral studies.read more

Some New 2-Methyl-4-[Piperazinylcarbonylethyl/ ethenyl/o-phenylenyl carbonyloxy]-6,7-Substituted Quinolines as Possible A nticonvulsants

Twenty four new 2-methyl-4-[piperazinylcarbonylethyl/ethenyl/ o-phenylenylcarbonyloxy]-6,7-substituted quinolines were synthesized by the condensation of 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-6,7-substituted quinoline with piperazinylcarbonyl acid' chloride in pyridine. Some of the compounds at a concentration of lxlO-3 mol/litre inhibited rat brain monoamine oxidase (MAO) in vitro and provided protection against pentylenetetrazole-induced convulsions in mice.read more
